The Ancient Salton Sea
The Salton Sea is an ancient lake that dates back to prehistoric times, when it was larger than its modern size due to higher water levels. It has been home to Native Americans for centuries, including the Cahuilla people who lived along its shoreline until they were displaced by Spanish missionaries in 1774. The area also became popular with ranchers during the late 1800s and early 1900s, when cattle were raised in what would become La Quinta. The Bradshaw Trail—which allowed access from Arizona into California via wagon—passed through this area as well.

In 1926, oil tycoon Walter Hays founded the famous La Quinta Hotel on land he had purchased near today’s city limits. The Desert Club—the first private club in town—was built nearby as an exclusive hangout spot for these same stars and their friends. 

PGA West Golf Course
In 1984, PGA West—one of the world’s best golf courses—was built just outside of La Quinta in partnership between pro golfer Greg Norman and businessman George Paulson Sr., who wanted to create a course that could host professional tournaments like those at Pebble Beach or Augusta National. Today, PGA West hosts tournaments like the CareerBuilder Challenge every January and draws top players from around the globe year-round.
