The Queen Emma Summer Palace in Honolulu is a historic royal residence located on the grounds of the historic Nu'uanu Valley. The palace was home to Queen Emma, who reigned as the queen consort of King Kamehameha IV from 1856 until her death in 1885. Today, it stands as a testament to the Hawaiian monarchy and is open to visitors.
The palace is a two-story structure built in traditional Hawaiian architecture with a grass roof made of thatch and walls with inner woodwork of koa wood and outer plaster covering. The interior features many period furnishings and artifacts that reflect the lives of Hawaiian royalty during this era. The ground floor houses the reception chambers, dining rooms, bedrooms, parlor and kitchen, while the upper floor has an art gallery and balcony overlooking magnificent views of Nu'uanu Valley.
The grounds around the palace were also part of its original design. The lush tropical gardens feature native Hawaiian plants like taro, pineapple, banana and coconuts, while a nearby fishpond was used to provide food for those within its walls. A statue honoring Queen Emma’s husband King Kamehameha IV stands near a pavilion where visitors can learn about their shared history.
In addition to being an important historical landmark for locals and tourists alike, Queen Emma Summer Palace also hosts special events such as hula performances, cultural festivals and holiday celebrations throughout the year. It's one of many places on Oahu that celebrates Hawaii’s rich heritage – something which continues to be treasured by people all over the world.
