Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue, Honolulu, HI

Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, and stands tall as a symbol of the spirit of the Hawaiian people. The life-size bronze statue depicts Duke Kahanamoku in his iconic pose with a surfboard tucked under one arm, ready to glide through the waves. The statue was erected in honor of Duke Kahanamoku’s legacy as a great waterman, swimmer, surfer, and Olympic gold medalist.

As one of the most influential figures in Hawaiian culture, Duke Kahanamoku’s legacy lives on at the statue. He is credited with making surfing popular worldwide and introducing it to mainlanders during his travels. He also served as an ambassador for Hawaii to promote tourism. In addition to surfing and swimming, Duke was involved in many other sports including boxing and volleyball. Through his athletic achievements and commitment to promoting Hawaiian culture, he has become an icon remembered by people around the world.

The Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Statue was unveiled on August 24th, 1990 by then-Governor John Waihee III at Waikiki Beach near Honolulu's famed Royal Hawaiian Hotel. The statue stands 8 feet tall from its base on a large piece of volcanic rock from Lanai Island which serves as its foundation and gives it a unique connection to Hawaii's land and sea - two elements that were so integral to Duke's life as an athlete and advocate for Hawaiian culture. On either side of the statue are two black marble plaques which commemorate key moments from Duke's life: when he won five Olympic medals between 1912-1920 while representing Hawaii; when he was designated ‘Ambassador of Aloha’ in 1959; when he was inducted into the International Swimming Hall Of Fame in 1965; and when he received the Hawai'i Medal Of Honor posthumously in 1985.

Today, visitors can pay homage to Duke Paoa Kahanamoku’s legacy at this beloved tribute site located right along Waikiki Beach next to Kapahulu Groin breakwater behind Kuhio Beach Park across from Kalakaua Avenue. It provides them with an opportunity to learn more about his life story while providing an inspirational reminder that dreams are achievable if you focus your energy towards reaching them no matter how challenging they may seem!
