The California Tunnel Tree in Yosemite Village is an impressive natural wonder that has been delighting visitors for decades. Located within Yosemite National Park, the tree is a giant sequoia that has been hollowed out by fire and man, creating a neat tunnel beginning at its base which is wide enough for cars to drive through. It's one of the oldest living trees in the park, estimated to be over 1,500 years old and standing over 200 feet tall. The feat of having such an enormous tree survive so long and still be standing is remarkable and an incredible testament to nature’s resilience.
The native Ahwahneechee tribe named the tree ‘tun-na-huh’ which means ‘big tree’ in their language, and it was eventually given the English name ‘California Tunnel Tree’ when Europeans settled in the area. Early settlers were fascinated with this unique feature of Yosemite Valley and quickly began driving their carriages through it to prove their bravery as a daring adventure. As technology advanced, more modern vehicles were also able to make it through, including cars and trucks used for local tourism today.
In 1995 lightning struck the California Tunnel Tree causing significant damage to its south side; however, after careful restoration work it still stands strong today as an eerie yet inviting landmark that can easily be seen from many points in the valley below.
