The USS San Francisco Memorial in San Francisco, California is a tribute to the brave crew of the Navy cruiser, which famously fought heroically in the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. The memorial consists of a large bronze sculpture located on the site of the former U.S. Naval Training Center at Hunters Point, now part of the San Francisco National Cemetery.
Created by sculptor Bruce Lindsay, this magnificent bronze sculpture stands more than 20 feet tall and evokes an image of strength and courage as it honors those who fought for freedom and justice. Denver artist Robert Toth created a life-size replica of “the Fighting Lady” herself as part of the memorial’s design. The ship’s actual flag is also on display at this site, which helps to create an even more powerful connection between those who served and those who are fortunate enough to witness this special tribute today.
The USS San Francisco was first commissioned in 1939 and served with distinction throughout WWII, seeing action in both Europe and the Pacific Theater including Guadalcanal. During that famous battle, she was struck by two torpedoes before returning fire against four enemy ships—a feat which earned her crew a Presidential Unit Citation and six Navy Cross medals for bravery. This battle also left 35 sailors dead and another 76 wounded — one of whom would later be honored with a Purple Heart Medal posthumously.
In addition to honoring those lost during WWII, the USS San Francisco Memorial pays tribute to all United States Navy personnel killed or missing in action since 1941 — making sure their sacrifice is never forgotten. Visitors can pay their respects with a visit to this stirring memorial which includes an interpretive center which highlights local naval history along with exhibits about the battleship's service during WWII. It also serves as a reminder that we must never forget the sacrifices our servicemen have made for freedom in times past, present, or future!
