The cave itself is made up of several levels, each with its own distinct characteristics and features. The lower level offers visitors plenty of interesting rock formations, while the upper level comprises a large chamber filled with stalactites and stalagmites. In addition to these fascinating geological formations, visitors can also find a variety of wildlife inhabiting the cave such as bats and foxes. The presence of these animals has given the cave its name, Fox Cave.
The cave itself has a long history dating back thousands of years when it was used by local Indigenous tribes for spiritual ceremonies and healing rituals. The Spanish Conquistadors also explored Fox Cave during their conquests in New Mexico in search for resources such as gold. To this day, there are still traces of their presence in the form of ancient petroglyphs found within the walls of the cave.
Visitors to Fox Cave are free to explore its depths on their own terms so long as they come prepared; flashlights or headlamps are essential items for exploring dark areas safely while sturdy walking shoes are advised due to some slippery surfaces inside the cave.
