Governors Island is a small island in Boston Harbor, located just offshore from downtown Boston. The island is home to a variety of historical and cultural attractions, as well as a number of parks and recreational areas.
Governors Island first became home to a fort in 1634, built by the Massachusetts Bay Colony to protect the colony from attack. The island was later used as a military outpost by both the British and American armies during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. In 1847, the island was designated as a state prison, and it remained in use as such until it was closed in 1963.
The island was then used as a dumping ground for construction debris until it was transformed into a public park in 1996. Today, Governors Island is a popular destination for picnics, concerts, and other events. The island is also home to several historic buildings, including Fort Jay, which is open to the public for tours.
