Sand Flats Recreation Area in Moab, Utah, is a popular destination for travelers looking for an outdoor adventure. Located on about 30 square miles of public lands just outside of Moab, the recreation area is known for its iconic red rock landscape and variety of recreational activities.
The recreation area features a network of trails that are suitable for both beginner and experienced riders. The trails include the popular Slickrock Bike Trail , which features some technical sections, as well as Scenic Byway 279, which offers stunning views of the canyon walls and mesas. For hikers, there are several trails including Amassa Back Trail and Hidden Valley Trail. All of the trails are marked with signs to help ensure safe exploration.
The sand flats also offer some excellent camping sites with spectacular views of the La Sal Mountains and surrounding canyons. There are two developed campgrounds located within the recreation area, one in Lower Flat and one near Courthouse Wash. Both campgrounds have been recently updated to provide visitors with amenities such as fire rings, picnic tables, restrooms, trash receptacles and grills. Campers must register their campsite before setting up camp at either location.
In addition to camping and hiking opportunities, there are also many other activities available within Sand Flats Recreation Area that can be enjoyed year-round.
