Vizcaya Museum & Gardens in Miami Beach is a stunning historical site that offers visitors an insight into the lavish lifestyle of the early twentieth century. Constructed between 1914 and 1922 by industrialist, businessman and philanthropist James Deering, Vizcaya was designed as a grand estate with a Renaissance-style villa, Italian gardens and native hammocks.
The main house at Vizcaya is modeled after 16th and 17th-century Italian villas. It features 34 rooms filled with antiques, paintings and sculpture collected from around Europe and North America. The grounds encompass 10 acres of formal gardens that feature a variety of sculptures, fountains, pools, stairways and terraces. A series of interconnected wooded paths lead visitors to hidden grottoes, ornamental pools and romantic vistas.
Visitors can explore the intricately landscaped gardens featuring sculptures and fountains depicting scenes from Greek mythology, Renaissance frescos set in stone walls, colorful plantings and more than 1000 species of trees from around the world. Among the many highlights are an expansive hedge maze inspired by the one at Versailles Palace in France; a hillside loggia overlooking Biscayne Bay; a dramatic artificial cave with numerous grottoes; multiple open-air pavilions with painted ceilings; marble statues; vibrant floral walls; a Florentine Loggia; an obelisk fountain surrounded by cascading stairs and terraced gardens.
Inside the main house there are many fine pieces of furniture dating back to the 15th century as well as fine silverware collections from all over Europe along with gorgeous tapestries that adorn its walls. Visitors can also tour Deering's private apartments complete with his bedroom suite where he spent his last years on this earth before passing away at Vizcaya in 1925. In addition to these artifacts from ages past there are also exotic plants found throughout Vizcaya's grounds including banyan trees imported from India for Deering's personal pleasure.
The nearby village which houses several historic outbuildings provides further insight into how life was lived here during the early 1900s when wealthy elites would come to escape their hectic lives in cities like New York or Chicago—or perhaps hide away while plotting some sort of Machiavellian scheme!
