The Wolfsonian–Florida International University in Miami Beach is a museum and library dedicated to the exploration of modern life and design. The collection consists of more than 120,000 objects ranging from rare books and periodicals to furniture, textiles, ceramics, paintings, sculpture, prints, photographs, architectural drawings and ephemera. Located in the heart of South Beach’s Art Deco District, the museum spans two city blocks and houses an expansive research library with over 50,000 volumes related to its collection. Many of these texts are unique or difficult to obtain elsewhere.
Founded in 1986 by Mitchell Wolfson Jr., a collector of decorative arts and design from 1890-1940 who donated his entire collection for public use prior to his death in 2010. The Wolfsonian Museum has since become known as an international beacon for students and scholars alike as it seeks to shed light on this particular era through its extensive selection of works representing various fields including industrial design, architecture, urban planning, technology history, political history and graphic arts.
The museum’s exhibitions explore topics such as utopianism in art deco design during the early 20th century; consumer culture during World War II; propaganda used during wartime; leisure culture before and after World War I; politics and popular culture during the Weimar Republic; Italian Futurism; German Expressionism; Russian Constructivism; Latin American modernism; British Empire colonialism/imperialism. Additionally there are also regular events held both onsite at the museum as well as outside in venues throughout Miami Beach hosted by The Wolfsonian that feature lectures by prominent scholars from around the world discussing various aspects related to their research interests such as architecture photography or typography history.
In addition to exhibitions The Wolfsonian also offers educational programs for all ages ranging from K-12 field trips to adult classes exploring topics such Modernist Graphic Design or History Through Objects: Exploring World War II Propaganda Posters & More! These programs strive to give visitors from all walks of life a deeper understanding of our shared past while providing resources they can take away with them into their own lives today. As a result The Wolfsonian has become an institution offering not only entertainment but education stemming from its impressive collection spanning multiple countries and cultures throughout time.
