Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, Kill Devil Hills, NC

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area located in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. Established in 1938, the refuge is home to some of the most diverse wildlife populations on the East Coast. From bald eagles and osprey to herons and marsh birds, it serves as an important habitat for many species of migratory waterfowl. Additionally, Pea Island is one of the few places in eastern North America where loggerhead sea turtles nest and hatch from May through October each year.

The refuge encompasses 14 miles (23 kilometers) of shoreline along both Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands, including 5300 acres (2145 hectares) of open water, salt marshes and maritime forests. The refuge also contains dozens of small islands that provide nesting sites for seabirds and herons. In fact, Pea Island has been designated as a Critical Habitat Area by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service due to its importance as a migratory bird stopover site along the Atlantic Flyway.

In addition to its diverse wildlife population, Pea Island also provides opportunities for outdoor recreation such as fishing, photography and nature walks. Visitors should be aware that camping is not allowed on refuge lands except by special use permit; however there are several commercial campgrounds nearby. Pets are also prohibited on refuge lands in order to protect sensitive habitats and wildlife populations.

For those looking to explore further into this beautiful landscape, guided tours are available throughout the year which allow visitors to experience some of the most breathtaking scenery along this stretch of coast - from remote barrier islands to estuarine wetlands teeming with life. Whether you’re interested in learning about local wildlife or simply taking in amazing views, a trip to Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge promises something for everyone!
