Oldfields–Lilly House & Gardens Indianapolis is an iconic historic landmark located on the grounds of the Indiana State Museum . The estate was originally built in 1916 and was owned by J.K. Lilly, Jr., a famous business tycoon and philanthropist. The grounds are now part of the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s campus and serve as a popular destination for tourists, locals, and more.
The sprawling 26-acre estate features lush gardens, rolling hills, picturesque ponds and lakes, a working farm with living animals, a nature preserve, beautiful 19th-century architecture, and plenty to explore. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the property that offer insight into its storied past and how it has evolved over the years. It provides an authentic window into days gone by as well as current times with its many art installations spread throughout the grounds.
Inside the house itself lies a treasure trove of history within its walls — original furnishings still remain from when it was owned by JK Lilly Jr., including his collections of textiles, furniture, artwork, bookshelves lined with literature from around the world, ceramics from Asia and Europe dating back centuries old, musical instruments from India that have been dated back to 1530 BC. Oldfields is also home to one of Indiana’s few remaining English walled gardens which was created by Lilly’s wife in 1917 after being inspired by her travels abroad.
