Bodie Island Lighthouse in Corolla is a historical landmark that has been standing since 1872. Located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this lighthouse was first lit back in 1871 and has been guiding ships to safety ever since. Standing at a height of 156 feet, Bodie Island Lighthouse is one of the tallest lighthouses along the East Coast. The lighthouse consists of two structures: a brick tower, with walls five feet thick near the base, and an attached two-story keeper’s dwelling.
The lighthouse’s distinctive black and white bands make it easy to spot from miles away and have become iconic symbols of this special area. The dots present around the structure are known as "day marks" and were used to help ships determine their position during daylight hours. Today, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from atop the tower or explore its grounds as part of a guided tour experience.
Inside Bodie Island Lighthouse, visitors will find interesting artifacts from days gone by, including original furniture from when keepers lived there more than 100 years ago. Visitors may even catch a glimpse of some local wild horses roaming about outside! During especially dark nights, visitors can also witness the awe-inspiring “First Order Fresnel Lens” which produces a beam visible for nearly 20 miles away and flashes every 10 seconds throughout the night sky!
Indeed, Bodie Island Lighthouse is an incredible place that offers something special for everyone. It’s an amazing reminder of our country’s history while providing stunning scenic views and unique opportunities to explore nature up close. For those interested in learning more about this historic landmark or sharing its beauty with friends and family alike, visiting Bodie Island Lighthouse in Corolla is an absolute must!
