The Palisades Sill Historic Marker in Angel Fire, New Mexico is a significant piece of local history. This marker is located at the western end of the Angel Fire Resort and commemorates the Palisades rock formation that was found in the area. This unique geologic feature highlighted by the historic marker is one of only a few such formations found in North America.
Named after its resemblance to a fortress wall, the Palisades Sill formation consists of vertical basalt columns stacked upon each other in a solid wall-like structure. These columns form an impressive 15 square mile area that reaches heights up to 8,000 feet above sea level. The vertical columns are estimated to be about 80 million years old, with some estimates going as far back as 200 million years. The rock formation was created through long periods of volcanic activity and millions of years of erosion from flowing streams and wind patterns.
The significance of this area is further accentuated by its rich cultural and historical significance for Native American tribes such as the Puebloans, Ute, Apache and Comanche who have inhabited these regions since time immemorial. They believed that this impressive wall was formed by their gods who used it to keep them safe from their enemies while they pursued hunting and gathering activities throughout the region.
Not only does this rock formation have immense historical value but it also encompasses rare flora and fauna species as well as spectacular views which make it an ideal outdoor recreation site for hikers and climbers alike. For example, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of Wheeler Peak (the highest elevation peak in New Mexico), numerous mountain ranges including Sangre de Cristos Range and Jemez Mountains, vast pine forests filled with wildlife, various meadows teeming with wildflowers, and crystal clear lakes surrounded by gorgeous wilderness trails.
The Palisades Sill Historic Marker stands as a reminder of our collective pasts both geological and human . It's an important part of our cultural identity which makes it all the more important that we honour its presence through preservation efforts while still enjoying its beauty through recreational activities like hiking or climbing. Although inaccessible by car due to its remote location, visitors can access the site via horseback or on foot through Forest Service land near Angel Fire Resort on State Road 434; however make sure you get permission prior to entering private property! So if you're ever visiting New Mexico take some time out to visit this incredible natural wonder - you won't regret it!
